    The long-term optical behavior of MRK421

    All data available in B band for the BL Lac object MRK421 from 22 publications are used to construct a historical light curve, dating back to 1900. It is found that the light curve is very complicated and consists of a set of outbursts with very large duration. The brightness of MRK421 varies from 11.6 magnitude to more than 16 magnitude. Analyses with Jurkevich method of computing period of cyclic phenomena reveal in the light curve two kinds of behaviors. The first one is non-periodic with rapid, violent variations in intensity on time scales of hours to days. The second one is periodic with a possible period of 23.1Ā±1.123.1\pm 1.1 years. Another possible period of 15.3Ā±0.715.3\pm 0.7 years is not very significant. We have tested the robustness of the Jurkevich method. The period of about one year found in the light curves of MRK421 and of other objects is a spurious period due to the method and the observing window. We try to explain the period of 23.1Ā±1.123.1 \pm1.1 years under the thermal instability of a slim accretion disk around a massive black hole of mass of 2āˆ—106MāŠ™2 *10^6 M_\odot.Comment: Tex, 14 pages, 5 Postscript figures.     Design and analysis of a wire-driven flexible manipulator for bronchoscopic interventions

    Bronchoscopic interventions are widely performed for the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. However, for most endobronchial devices, the lack of a bendable tip restricts their access ability to get into distal bronchi with complex bifurcations. This paper presents the design of a new wire-driven continuum manipulator to help guide these devices. The proposed manipulator is built by assembling miniaturized blocks that are featured with interlocking circular joints. It has the capability of maintaining its integrity when the lengths of actuation wires change due to the shaft flex. It allows the existence of a relatively large central cavity to pass through other instruments and enables two rotational degrees of freedom. All these features make it suitable for procedures where tubular anatomies are involved and the flexible shafts have to be considerably bent in usage, just like bronchoscopic interventions. A kinematic model is built to estimate the relationship between the translations of actuation wires and the manipulator tip position. A scale-up model is produced for evaluation experiments and the results validate the performance of the proposed mechanism

The delayed sensor measurement is assumed to be a linear function of a stochastic variable that satisfies the Bernoulli random binary distribution law. An upper bound for the actual covariance of the uncertain stochastic parameter system is derived and used for estimation variance constraints. Such an upper bound is then minimized over the filter parameters for all stochastic sensor delays and admissible deterministic uncertainties. It is shown that the desired filter can be obtained in terms of solutions to two discrete Riccati difference equations of a form suitable for recursive computation in online applications. An illustrative example is presented to show the applicability of the proposed method

    Morphology, structure, optical, and electrical properties of AgSbOā‚ƒ

    The morphology of defect pyrochlore-type, AgSbOā‚ƒ microparticle/nanoparticles obtained via solid state reaction evolve from irregular to Fullerene-like polyhedra before finally decomposing into metal-organic framework-5 like particles with increase in sintering temperature. The defect pyrochlore-type AgSbOā‚ƒ particles are slightly Ag deficient while the valence of the antimony ion is shown to be +5 giving rise to a probable stoichiometry of Agā‚Ėā‚“ SbVOā‚ƒĖā‚“/ā‚‚, with xāˆ¼0.01ā€“0.04. A highly structured diffuse intensity distribution observed via electron diffraction is interpreted in terms of correlated displacements of one-dimensional (1D) silver ion chains along āŸØ110āŸ© directions. A redshifting in the absorption edges in UV-visible absorption spectra is observed for samples prepared at sintering temperatures higher than 1000ā€‰Ā°C and attributed to the surface plasma resonance effect associated with small amounts of excess metallic Ag on the Agā‚Ėā‚“ SbVOā‚ƒĖā‚“/ā‚‚ particles. An electrical properties investigation of the silver antimonate samples via dielectric, conductivity, and electric modulus spectroscopy shows a prominent dielectric relaxation associated with grain boundaries.
